Traditional braces use brackets and wires to straighten crowded, gapped or bite-misaligned teeth. The wires apply gentle pressure that gradually shifts tooth position. Efros Orthodontics provides braces for children, teens and adults at our Rhinebeck office. Our office sits at 187 East Market Street, Suite 115, just off Route 308 near the village center, and treats patients from Red Hook, Tivoli, Staatsburg, Hyde Park and Poughkeepsie.

How braces straighten teeth
Brackets bonded to each tooth hold an archwire that applies steady, gentle pressure. Over weeks and months, that pressure moves teeth into corrected positions. The bone around the teeth adapts as they move.
Your first appointment
Every plan starts with an iTero digital scan instead of a putty impression. We also take digital panoramic and cephalometric X-rays. The scan takes a few minutes and gives our doctors a 3D model to plan your case. That same scan can later be used to build aligners if that path suits you.
How long treatment takes
Most patients wear braces for 12 to 30 months, depending on how much the bite needs to shift. Adjustment visits run about 20 minutes and happen every 4 to 6 weeks.
Which braces fit your situation
Metal braces and ceramic braces both move teeth the same way. They differ in appearance and a few daily details.
| Feature | Metal Braces | Ceramic Braces |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Visible metal brackets | Tooth-colored brackets |
| Durability | Very durable | Slightly more fragile |
| Typical use | All ages, more complex bites | Patients who want a subtler look |
For some patients, Invisalign is worth considering instead. Aligners are removable and worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Adults often finish treatment in 12 to 18 months. Clear aligners for children are also an option our doctors can discuss at your visit.
Daily life with braces
Eating and cleaning habits need small adjustments once braces are on. Sticky candy, popcorn kernels, hard nuts and ice can damage brackets or wires. It helps to avoid them for the duration of treatment.
Cleaning teeth with brackets and wires
Brush after meals and use a floss threader to clean under the wire. A loose bracket or poking wire is usually a quick repair. We handle emergency bracket repairs at our Rhinebeck office.
When treatment should start
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by age 7. This holds even if a child’s permanent teeth haven’t fully come in. Early evaluation can identify bite problems while jaw growth still allows simpler early treatment, expanders, or space maintainers. Treatment needs and goals differ across braces for kids, braces for teens and braces for adults. Each path gets its own plan.

Braces questions from Rhinebeck patients
Can retainers replace the need for braces afterward?
No, retainers don’t replace braces. They hold teeth in place once braces finish their work. Skipping a retainer after treatment often allows teeth to drift back toward their original position.
Will braces interfere with instruments or sports?
Braces rarely stop patients from playing instruments or sports. A mouthguard is recommended for contact activities. Most people adjust to brackets within the first week or two.
How much discomfort follows an adjustment?
Mild soreness for a day or two after each adjustment is typical. Over-the-counter pain relief usually manages it well. It usually fades before the next visit.
What happens if a bracket breaks?
A broken bracket or poking wire should be reported so we can schedule a repair. Leaving it unaddressed can slow treatment progress.
