Clear aligners for children are a removable alternative to metal braces for kids with developing bites. Efros Orthodontics provides this treatment at our Latham office. The aligners move teeth gradually and stay nearly invisible. They also come out for meals and brushing.

Clear Aligners for Children Versus Regular Invisalign
Clear aligners for children are built for growing jaws and developing teeth. They address crowding, spacing, and bite issues while there is still room to guide growth. Older children and teens typically move on to Invisalign for teens once their permanent teeth settle in.
Why These Aligners Suit Younger Children
The aligners use flexible plastic that accommodates erupting teeth and changing arches. They are removable, so a child can keep brushing and eating normally. The design leaves space for permanent teeth still coming in behind baby teeth.
Choosing Between Aligners and Braces for a Child
Not every child’s bite responds the same way to clear aligners. Some need the steady pressure that traditional braces for kids provide. This is especially true for more complex bite issues. We review this during a consultation that includes a digital scan and X-rays. Then we recommend whichever option fits the bite best.
| Factor | Clear Aligners for Kids | Traditional Braces |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Nearly invisible | Visible metal or ceramic brackets |
| Removable | Yes, for eating and brushing | No |
| Typical duration | Varies by case, often a shorter early stage | 12 to 30 months depending on the bite |
| Best for | Mild to moderate crowding or spacing | More complex bite corrections |
What To Expect at the First Visit
Every plan starts with an iTero digital scan. This replaces putty impressions with a quick 3D model of the teeth. We also take digital panoramic and cephalometric X-rays to see how the jaw and roots are developing. This information lets us map out whether clear aligners, interceptive treatment, or another option fits best.
What Early Treatment Can Address
Early intervention can guide jaw growth and create space for incoming teeth. It can also correct crossbites or crowding before they worsen. We also offer expanders and space maintainers when a child needs different early support. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by age 7. This gives us time to watch development closely.
How Long Treatment Takes and Daily Wear
Children wear aligners between 20 and 22 hours a day. They switch to a new set on a schedule we set during the plan. Progress checks happen roughly every 6 to 8 weeks so we can track how the bite is shifting. The aligners also do not require avoiding specific foods the way braces do.
Cost of Clear Aligners for Kids in Latham
Cost depends on the complexity of the bite and how long treatment runs. We are in-network with most major insurance plans and offer 0% interest payment plans, with payments as low as $99 a month in some cases. More detail is on our financial page. A free consultation includes X-rays, a digital scan, and a walkthrough of every option for a child’s bite.

Invisalign for Kids Questions From Latham Patients
Can children remove aligners for school events or photos?
It is best not to. Aligners should come out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush. Consistent wear time is what keeps treatment on schedule.
Will a child need braces later after clear aligners?
Some children do need a second phase of treatment once all permanent teeth arrive. Early aligner treatment often shortens or simplifies that second phase.
How do we know if a child is ready for aligners?
We assess readiness through a digital scan and X-rays that show root development and jaw growth. If the timing is not right yet, we recommend monitoring visits until treatment makes sense.
What happens if an aligner gets lost or broken?
We can usually move a child to the next set in the series, or provide a replacement. This depends on the stage of treatment. Keeping track of aligners during meals and sports helps avoid this.
